Unlike most Hindu festivals, which are celebrated during the day, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Also, in most Hindu festivals, which include expressions of cultural revelation, Maha Shivaratri is an intense event focused on its introspection, fasting, meditation on Shiva, self-study, social harmony and all-night vigil in Shiva temples Is remarkable.

The celebration includes an "awakening", overnight waking and prayers, as Shaiva Hindus mark this night as "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in their lives and worlds through Shiva. . Fruits, leaves, sweets and milk are offered to Shiva, some people fast throughout the day, perform Vedic or Tantric worship of Shiva, and some do meditation yoga.In Shiva temples, Shiva's holy mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" is recited during the day.

Maha Shivaratri is celebrated on three or ten days depending on the Hindu luni-solar calendar. There is one Shivaratri (12 per year) every lunar month. The main festival is called Maha Shivaratri, or Great Shivaratri, which takes place on the 13th night (wandering the moon) and the 14th day of the month at Phalgun. In the Gregorian calendar, the day falls in February or March.

History and importance

Many legends tell the importance of Mahashivaratri, one is the dance night of Shiva.
Maha Shivaratri is mentioned in many Puranas, especially Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana. These medieval era Shaivite texts present various versions associated with this festival, and refer to fasting, reverence for Shiva's symbol such as the lingam.

Various legends describe the significance of Maha Shivaratri. According to a legend in the Shaivism tradition, it is the night when Shiva performs a heavenly dance of creation, protection and destruction. Chanting of hymns, recitation of Shiva scriptures and ragas of devotees are included in this cosmic dance and remember the presence of Shiva everywhere. According to another legend, this is the night when Shiva and Parvati were married.  A different legend states that the Shiva emblem such as the offering of a linga is an annual occasion, if to restart on a sinful path, to get rid of past sins, and reach Mount Kailash. And get liberation.

The dance tradition has historical roots on this festival. Maha Shivaratri has served as a historic confluence of artists for annual dance ceremonies in major Hindu temples such as Konark, Khajuraho, Pattadakal, Modhera and Chidambaram. In the Chidambaram temple, the event is called Natanjali, meaning "worship through dance", famous for its sculpture depicting all the dance postures in the ancient Hindu text of the performing arts called Natya Shastra. .  Similarly, in Khajuraho Shiva temples, a major fair and dance festival on Mahashivaratri, where Shaivite pilgrims were camping for miles around the temple complex, was documented in 1864 by Alexander Cunningham.
