Moon Light

Moon Light :  consists of mostly sunlight , reflected from the parts of the Moon's surface where the Sun's light strikes.

Illumination : The intensity of moonlight varies greatly depending on its phase, but even the full Moon typically provides only about 0.05-0.1 lux illumination. When the full moon is at perigee and viewed around upper culmination from the tropics , the illuminance can reach up to 0.32 lux. From Earth, the apparent magnitude of the full Moon is only about 1/380000 that of the Sun.

The color of moonlight, particularly around full Moon, appears bluish to the human eye compared to most artificial light sources due to the Purkinje effect. Moonlight is not actually tinted blue, and although moonlight is often referred to as "Silvery", it has no inherent silvery quality.

The Moon's albedo is 0.136, meaning only 13.6% of incident sunlight is reflected from the lunar surface. Moonlight generally hampers astronomical viewing, so astronomers usually avoid observing sessions around full Moon. It takes approximately 1.26 seconds for moonlight to reach Earth's surface..

Folklore

In folklore, moonlight sometimes has a harmful influence. For example, sleeping in the light of a full Moon on Certain nights was said to transform a person into a werewolf. The light of the Moon was thought to worsen the symptoms of lunatics, and to sleep in moonlight could  make one blind, or mad. Nyctalopia was thought to be caused by sleeping in moonlight in the tropics.

"Moon blindness" is a name for equine recurrent uveitis. Moonlight is no longer thought of as the cause. In the 16th century, moonmilk, a soft white limestone precipitate found in caves, was thought to be caused by the rays of the Moon.

In 2003, Tarell Alvin McCraney wrote a semi-autobiographical drama In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue to counter his mother's death from AIDS. The theater pieces were kept for almost a decade before serving as the basis for the moonlight.

After the release of his first feature film Medicine for Melancholi in 2008, Barry Jenkins wrote various screenplays, none of which went into production.  In January 2013, producer Adele Romanski urged Jenkins to make a second film.  With the goal of making a low-budget "cinematic and personal" film, the two churned out several times a month via video-chat.  Jenkins was introduced to McCreary's play through the Borsk Arts Collective in Miami.  After discussions with McCarney, Jenkins wrote the first draft of the film in a month's visit to Brussels.

Although the original play consisted of three parts, they were run together so that the audience would experience one day in the lives of Little, Chiron and Black.  In fact, it has not been clarified that the characters are the same person until halfway through the play. Jenkins instead chose to split the three pieces of the original piece into separate chapters and focus on Chiron's story from a colleague's perspective.

The result was a screenplay that featured the same upbringing as Jenkins and McCraney. The character was based on Juan, Macroni's brother's father, who was also McRainie's "keeper" in childhood, as Juan was for Chiron.  Similarly, there was a portrayal of Paula Jenkins and McCraney's mothers, both of whom were struggling with drug addictions. McCraney and Jenkins also both grew up in Liberty Square, Miami, the film's primary location.

Jenkins looked for funding for the film during 2013, a success after sharing the script with Plan B Entertainment executives at this year's Taylor Film Festival. Dad Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B Entertainment became producers of the film, while A24 worked to finance it and handle worldwide distribution, marking the company's first production.

Casting

Various actors portrayed Chiron and Kevin in each chapter of the film. Ashton Sanders was cast in the role of Kishore Chiron.  Alex Hibbert and Jaiden Pinner were cast in an open call in Miami for the roles of China Chiron and Child Kevin respectively.  Trevant Rhodes originally auditioned for the role of Kevin before he was selected as an adult Chiron.

Andre Holland previously starred in McCraney's plays, and read In the Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue a decade before the film's release. Holland was drawn to the role of adult Kevin when later reading the film's screenplay, saying "[the screenplay] was the best thing I've ever read".

Naomi Harris was initially reluctant to portray Paula, stating that she did not want to play a conservative portrayal of a black woman.  Addressing his concerns, Jenkins emphasized the character representation of both his and McCraney's mothers.  Harris later commented that although he had vowed not to portray a crack addict earlier, the film's script and director's tolerance appealed to him.  In preparation for his role, Harris watched interviews with people with cocaine addiction, and met with addicted women. He relates his experiences of bullying to addicts' attempts to avoid trauma.

Romanski proposed Juan to be played by Maharshala Ali, who had a role in one of his first produced films, Kicks. Jenkins hesitated while casting Ali due to his role as Remy Danton in House of Cards; However, Ali became convinced after understanding the extent of his acting and his character. Ali considered the role an important opportunity to portray an African-American male protector, and drew on his experiences of "growing up" with Juan.  Jenelle Moné was sent the script and immediately linked to her role as Teresa, remarking that she too had family members with similar conflicts related to drugs and sexual identity.

Filming

Part of the film was shot in the Liberty Square housing project

Filming began on October 14, 2015 in Miami, Florida.  After scouting for locations in Miami with Romanski,  Jenkins attempted to film in locations where he had previously lived. Liberty Square, located in the neighborhood of Liberty City, was chosen as a housing project, as both McCraney and Jenkins grew up in the area.  The shooting of the film was no less than before as Jenkins had relatives living in the area,  though the cast and crew had escorts.
